Behavioral IP reuse methodology

Sean Dart of Forte Design Systems outlines a more efficient alternative to RTL-led approaches to the reuse of intellectual property.

bio picSean Dart is vice president, engineering of Forte and has over 20 years of software design experience, with 14 of those years in EDA. Prior to joining Forte, he was CTO of Speed Electronics, a specialist in front-end design tools for logic synthesis flows. He received his BSc from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

No one disputes the promise inherent in the concept of design reuse. But the true value of what has been delivered so far is often debated. This paper proposes a reuse methodology that is both practical and real and which uses behavioral synthesis as its driving technology. It discusses the most basic elements of behavioral synthesis and demonstrates two different reuse scenarios using a concrete example and real logic synthesis results.
